Notice a lack of dribbling in the Gustine High School gymnasium? Well, it’s because the school has one less team competing on the hardwood this season — their varsity boys’ squad.
After playing their three scheduled games at the 81st annual Gustine Rotary Basketball Tournament in early December, and losing them all in lopsided fashion, the Reds decided to scrap the season due to lack of participation.
The Reds lost 53-31 in the tournament-opener against Millenium of Tracy, 91-17 to Livingston in their next game, and 72-8 to Los Banos on the final day.
All but one player from the team’s varsity roster was an underclassman, and several opted to switch winter sports, begin their preparation for the spring sports season, or sit out of athletics for the remainder of the year.
Nevertheless, the school is still fielding a junior varsity team, which has gone winless through 10 games.
Both of Gustine’s girls’ teams, meanwhile, also remain in action.
The decision to forfeit the remainder of the season also gives each team in the Southern Athletic League — Denair, Delhi, Waterford, Stone Ridge Christian, Mariposa County and Le Grand — two less games on the regular season schedule.
