The Gustine Reds boys’ baseball team Coach Craig Beevers is optimistic about the opportunity the team possesses and hopes to knock it out the park and earn a playoff in the Southern Athletic League.
“We’re just trying to see what people can do. They (Reds) played well today. You just got to make the routine plays, throw strikes, you could probably win just about every game,” said Beevers.
Despite facing a setback with their 7-16 loss to the Chowchilla Tribe in a non-league match on Friday, the Reds remain calm. Last season, they finished 5th in the competitive Southern Athletic League, securing a 7-7 league record and an 8-8 overall record. The experience gained in the previous season positions them to improve, rather than climbing mountains, to level over last season.
“End at top four in the league,” said Beevers. That is the goal for this season. It’s a matter of determination to secure a playoff spot reflects not only the team’s dedication, but a commitment.
“We’re expecting to be somewhere in the top fighting for a playoff spot. And, you know, down the road if we can figure it out,” said Beevers.
The team is a blend of experience and talent. Team chemistry is a great asset. Coach Beevers is banking on his matured team, he’s coached players since freshman and sophomore grade. Year-over-year, the team is set to improve. Also, head Reds basketball coach, now assistant baseball coach, Charles Roth, joins the teams. Bringing a familiar face to some of the players who just ended their basketball season.
The Reds are on their way. This week, they play Mendota Aztecs at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, at Mendota. Then, they host Merced Bears, for a home game, at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Last game of the week will be against Stone Ridge Christian, for a home game, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
