Gustine softball fell to Hilmar High School, 14-0, on Wednesday, progressing their record to a respectable 2-3-1 for the season.

The Reds have had their fair share of mistakes and have overcome some of them. The Reds are keeping their head high as they approach league games next week.

“They (Hilmar) were just hitting in the spots we couldn’t get, but all-in-all I think we did pretty good at the end,” said head coach Yolanda Gallichio.

The Reds were fresh off a hot week. Their win against Pacheco High School, 16-5, Feb. 29, during the Cost Fields tournament, gave the team a morale boost. But it wasn’t enough to outlast the Trans Valley League Hilmar Yellowjackets. Soon after, on Thursday, the Reds took another loss to the Trans Valley League opponent Hughson High School, 1-12.

Overall, the team had over 22 plate appearances and four runs. A place to work from to ensure that they’re bringing in players across the home plate. But the Reds are giving up easy scores, defensively, to resist runaway scores. This is due to a search for their starting pitcher, and alternation between Alexis Gallichio (1) and Anahi Alvarez (14).

“They are not giving up,” Yolanda Gallichio mentioned. “Some of them are still learning their certain positions where I put them. And some are new to a position.”

It’s still early in the season. The Reds are still learning what they are best at. And that includes players’ positions on the team. There should be no issue for players finding their niche within the team. Most players have carried over from playing multi-sports at Gustine High School. For example, Shandel Aguilera (9) has crossed over from volleyball, soccer, and basketball.

“They’re really coming around and everything. I think we’re going to have a pretty good season when we start our league,” said Yolanda Gallichio.

The Reds are scheduled to begin their first league game on March 19. But this week, the Reds will go up against Mountain House High School at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, at Mountain House. It’s their only game of the week and will give the Reds some rest before beginning their most important games of the season, Southern Athletic League ball games.
