The last time Gustine and Waterford met on the soccer pitch the Reds walked away with a decisive 6-2 victory. This time the Wildcats were looking for a little revenge. The result was a close back and forth contest Friday with Waterford nabbing the victory with a score of 3-2.
Gustine ow has a record of 7-2 and are standing in second place in the Southern League Division. Waterford is at 7-3 and third in the league.
Gustine struck first with a corner kick assist from #18 Jose Gonzalez to #10 Eric Mora for a header goal, making it 1-0. It didn’t take long for Waterford to answer back, tying the game 1-1 at the 23-minute mark.
Gustine had an opportunity to take the lead in the first half with a shot on goal by Mora but it was blocked by the Waterford goalie. The score remained tied at 1-1 at halftime.
Mora found the back of the net again early in the second half, putting Gustine up 2-1. Waterford tied the game again at the 15-minute mark, making it 2-2. Then, they took the lead with a goal at the 9-minute mark, bringing the score to 3-2.
There was some late game drama when Mora was given a yellow card, signaling the refs saw something they considered unsportsmanlike. A Waterford coach received a red card at the 3-minute mark and there was extra time added to the game.
