The Gustine Reds are hopeful their playoff victory on Nov. 8 will be just the first in a series of wins leading up to the championships. But to get there, they’ll have to face and defeat a formidable foe in the Summerville Bears.
The Reds are advancing to the second round of CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 7 playoffs after beating Golden Sierra 21-18 on Nov. 8.
The Reds, who are seeded at #8, will be facing the number one seeded Summerville Bears at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Summerville.
Summerville has a 9-1 record overall, while Gustine sits at 5-6.
The Gustine defense will have to contend with a Summerville offense that tends to come out strong in the first half of the game.
Summerville’s team scoring average in the first quarter is 11 points and 16.6 points in the second quarter. Gustine’s average is 10 in the first and 6.5 in the second quarter.
Offensively, Gustine will be looking toward quarterback Daniel Navarro and key scorers, Mike Saaranzin, Alex Quezada, and Crue Correa.
“I’m feeling good about this game because they can be beaten,” Navarro said. “We just have to not give up. As a team we won’t be giving up, no matter what.”
“I’m feeling good about the game,” Correa said. “We have been watching film on them and studying their formations and putting in that extra work everyday makes me feel really confident about it. As a team we are going to work on our bond. We’re going to work everyday and that makes me feel really confident about it.”
CalPreps, the website that provides high school football team rankings used by the Sac-Joaquin Section to help determine playoff seeds, gives Summerville a 99 percent projection to win the match at a score of 48-3. Though, Golden Sierra was projected to win the previous game and Gustine proved that projection wrong.
