In its third Southern Athletic League (SAL) meet this season, Gustine High School’s track and field team won two events during Wednesday’s meet at Waterford High School.
The Reds finished fourth and sixth place overall in the men’s junior varsity and women’s varsity leaderboards, respectively. Denair High School dominated the men’s JV and varsity leaderboards, having at least a 60-point differential from second place. As the host, Waterford finished at the top of the women’s varsity leaderboard with 133 points, 40 points ahead of second place Denair.
Juan Aguilera and Brady Ramos took home first place finishes for Gustine within their respective events.
In the men’s JV 400-meter race, Juan Aguilera ran a time of 1 minute and .10 seconds to win the race.
Ramos finished the men’s JV 1600-meter race with a time of 5:46.39 to secure top placement for the event.
Head coach Sarah Bedford praised Aguilera and Ramos for their performance and consistency throughout this season.
“Juan [Aguilera] and Brady [Ramos] have both been really consistent in their scoring and output in their events. I’m excited to see, especially since they’re both freshman, how far they can push themselves and how far they can go.”
Throughout the meet, numerous Gustine athletes finished within the top five of their respective events and recorded new personal records.
Xel-Ha Pantoja recorded a time of 6:40.95 to finish in second place in the women’s varsity 1600-meter race.
Shandel Aguilera finished in second place in the women’s varsity 400-meter race with a time of 1:05.16.
Ramos came close to getting another top placement as he came in second place in the men’s JV 800-meter race with a time of 2:41.35, more than two seconds longer than first place.
Gustine’s team, which consisted of Ramos, Juan Aguilera, Jose Duran and Jason Corona, finished the men’s JV 4x100 relay in third place with a time of 54.58 seconds.
Duran and Ramos finished the men’s 400 meters in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
In the women’s varsity shot put and discus throw, Isabella Horo finished within the top five. She recorded throws of 7.65 meters in the shot put and 21.72 meters in the discus throw.
Gustine will travel to Golden Valley High School in Merced on Friday for the Bob Pryor Memorial Invite at Veterans Stadium. The track meet will begin at 10 a.m.
