NEWMAN, Calif – A three-run lead looked like it was going to give the Orestimba High baseball team its first win of Trans-Valley League play on Friday.
But visiting Sonora had other plans. That led to the Wildcats came from behind to register a 7-6 win over Orestimba (0-2 in the TVL, 2-13 overall).
The Warriors held a 5-2 lead over the Wildcats entering the top of the fifth inning. Then Sonora, which only had five hits in the game, scored two runs in the inning and three more in the top of the sixth frame for the narrow win.
Orestimba, which Sonora took a short-lived 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, took a 3-1 advantage after its first at-bats. Then the Warriors scored a run each in the bottom of the second and third innings for a bigger lead.
The Warriors had nine hits in the contest. Donvan Torres and Payton Marcotte had two hits each for the Warriors. Colby Cabral and Jaden Sotelo each hit a double.
Ray Montes had 2 RBIs for the Warriors.
Sonora 15, Orestimba 6
In the TVL opener on the Wildcats’ field on March 19, Sonora held a 4-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when it added two more runs for a 6-2 advantage.
But Orestimba battled, entering the top of the fifth frame, scoring four runs to tie the game at 6-all. But at the bottom of the fifth, Orestimba plated six runs for a 12-6 lead.
The Wildcats scored three times in their final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth.
Orestimba had nine hits in this game. Cabral and Kevin Moreno had two hits each.
Nathan Ceja, along with Warrior teammates Landon Marcotte, Torres and Richie Rivas, had a hit each.
Tanner Navarro had three hits for Sonora. Four other Wildcat players had two hits each.
Upcoming games
Orestimba will play its second home-and-home series on Wednesday, hosting Hughson at 4 p.m.
On Friday, the Warriors make the short trek to the East side of Stanislaus County to play at Hughson, also at 4 p.m.
Then on Saturday, Orestimba plays another non-league game, this time at Mendota. This contest also is scheduled at 4 p.m.
