Warriors’ softball splits games

The Orestimba Warriors started their week with a 2-0 loss to the Hughson Huskies on Tuesday, but ended the week with a victory over Pacific Grove.

Orestimba's loss on Tuesday dropped their record down to 2-8.

Pitching and solid offense on both sides kept the bats quiet for most of the game. Hughson’s Emma Carne, a freshman, pitched all seven innings for the Huskies, striking out five players. Only three Warriors were able to connect with Carne’s pitches – freshman Salece Machado, freshman Rae Oliveros and Sophomore Natalie Corella.

Junior Hailey Starr was on the mound for the Warriors, pitching six innings and striking out three.

Orestimba was the clear victor by an 11-2 margin over Pacific Grove on Friday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Warriors as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Starr was back on the mound for Orestimba. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off ten hits (and not a single walk).

She was also big at the plate, firing off two home runs and three RBI while going 2-for-4. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.

The team relied heavily on Machado, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in both of her plate appearances. That stolen base was her first of the season. Belany Martens was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-1.

Orestimba lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Orestimba picked up their first road victory, bumping their record up to 3-8.

Looking ahead, Orestimba will be playing in front of their home fans against Escalon at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Orestimba is facing Escalon at the right time seeing as Escalon is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
